Isleworth, situated on the banks of the River Thames, in the 18thC was known for its river-based industries, orchards and market gardens. By the late 19thC Isleworth had become an industrial community with flour and beer jostling for position on its wharves. While housing now covers the former orchards, and the once busy wharves lie silent, many reminders of Isleworth’s history, spanning some 4,000 years, remain. To highlight some aspects of its past, and to commemorate the centenary of Rotary International in 2005, Heston & Isleworth Rotary Club has installed nine Heritage Plaques. The Club is grateful to the Isleworth Society and London Borough of Hounslow for their support in this project and hopes you enjoy this insight into Isleworth’s fascinating history. The trail for the plaques can be started at any of the places shown on the map.
